Just got this e-mail, which seemed worth (a) passing along, and (b) pinning to my forehead:

It is not bad thing to start long and then cut, cut, cut. To the end
of his days, Jefferson thought his long draft of the Declaration of
Independence was superior to the finished product; but I have read both, and Jefferson was wrong by far.
